Lip balm is one of those skincare product I can’t do without, but reading what’s inside commercially sold ones terrifies me. There are so many chemical ingredients in them—synthetic dyes, butylated hydroxytoluene (a hormone disrupter) and fragrance, just to name a few. These ingredients shouldn’t be on our skin and what’s worse… when we put them on our lips, we eat them!
That’s why making my own natural lip balm was the first step I took to natural Do It Yourself cosmetics. It’s so simple to make, it’s addictive. You can even add ingredients like cinnamon, cocoa or cayenne pepper for color and flavor! What’s more, my recipe includes vitamins and oils that will protect your lips from sun and wind, leaving them soft and moisturized, making it perfect for hot summer days and cold winter nights.
What you need to create natural lip balm:
- Beeswax (2 teaspoons)
- Liquid oil (eg. olive oil, optional for summer, 5-10 drops)
- Hard oil (eg. coconut oil, 2 teaspoons)
- Spices and herbs from your kitchen (cinnamon, anyone?)
- Vitamin E (liquid, 2-3 drops)
You’ll also need a 0.5-1 fl oz tiny glass container or simply #upcycle an old lip balm tin or plastic tube as long it doesn’t show signs of visible wear. Remember, plastics are designed for varying durability before they begin to degrade. Breastcancer.org gives simple tips on how best to use, and reuse, plastics.
Mix it up:
Add all ingredients directly into your glass container (or into a glass bowl if using an upcycled lip balm container) and melt for about 20 seconds in your microwave. Alternatively, you can add the ingredients in a small saucepan and melt over very low heat for about a minute until all ingredients liquefy. Then transfer to your glass container. Let cool and your lip balm is ready.
Not only is this recipe pocket-friendly and cruelty-free, it protects your lips from dangerous chemicals while reducing your plastic use.
Wishing you a natural beauty summer! What’s your favorite natural lip balm or gloss formula?
